Open Office is a free word processor, spreadsheet, database and drawing package from Sun.  It is compatible with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access.

AVG offers free Anti-virus software to personal users.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is free and is needed to be able to read ‘pdf’ documents, which are often encountered on the Internet.

Mozilla Firefox 3 is a tabbed browser, and a very good alternative to Internet Explorer 6 and 7.

Serif often offer older versions of their PagePlus Desktop Publisher program, and their website creation software WebPlus through their website and through computer magazines. This is a good way of finding out if you like their software.

Irfanview is an excellent image viewing program.
